Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP)

The Section 8 Program (HCVP) is a federally funded program from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). It provides rental assistance to low income families and disabled and elderly individuals. The program enables eligible applicants to obtain decent, safe and sanitary housing at an affordable amount. Applicants must meet established income limits and meet additional state and federal regulations and selection requirements. Clients receiving Section 8 assistance seek housing that fits their needs in the private rental market and they pay a portion of the monthly rental based on their income and other factors. The remaining portion of the rent is paid directly to the landlord in the form of a housing assistance payment on or about the first of every month. All units must pass an inspection and be in compliance with applicable lead paint laws. Total program allocation is 643 vouchers. A number of these vouchers are set aside for populations with special needs.

SHELTER PLUS CARE

A federally funded program, this project based subsidy provides rental assistance for
disabled very low-income families and individuals recovering from addiction. Eight apartments are available at 184-186 Bradford St. and 206 Francis Ave., Pittsfield, MA. Clients receiving assistance through the Shelter Plus Care program pay 30% of their monthly income as their share of the rent. The remaining portion of the rent is paid directly to the landlord in the form of a housing assistance payment on or about the first of every month. All units must pass an inspection and be in compliance with applicable lead paint laws.
